The Compost Project

A rind is a terrible thing to waste

Truman State's Compost Project unites students, faculty and staff in the effort to reduce food waste at Truman.  The project began when a group of students saw a need and conceived a plan to make it happen. A collaboration between Dr. Michael Kelrick and several Truman students resulted in a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to fund the operation.

Student employees collect food waste from the University’s Food Service (provided by Sodexho) and convert it into compost, which is then freely given to community members who request it.

The project reduces waste in the dining halls, helps the environment, and saves the university money — all while providing a meaningful job and educational experience to its employees.
